anand sweets vegan curry

Following PETA’s weird decision to award Wetherspoons ‘best vegan curry’ in their Vegan Food Awards 2016, I’ve decided to crowdsource suggestions for genuinely great vegan curries around Britain.

Here a few of my own suggestions, from around Leeds. I’ll be updating this article with your suggestions and hope to assemble a useful list of great vegan curries from all around the country.

You can add a comment to the bottom of this article, or on my Facebook page, or by sending me an email.

The best vegan curries in Leeds (according to The Vegan Punk):

Anand Sweets, 109 Harehills Road, Harehills, Leeds, LS8 5HS

Anand Sweets serves Punjabi Indian food and as their name suggests, they specialise in Indian sweets. They also do a range of curries which are all really high quality and great value. All of their food is vegetarian and there are loads of vegan options, all of which are clearly marked on the menu. My favourite curry is their chana masala – made from chickpeas, spicy and delicious!

Hansa’s, 72/74 North Street, Leeds, LS2 7PN

Hansa has been serving great Gujarati Indian food at her restaurant for 30 years, and it’s obvious why the place has remained a Leeds favourite for such a long time. The food is mainly vegan (a few dishes are vegetarian), and the restaurant holds regular special events, as well as cooking classes and even guided tours to India. I love their chevti daal.

Updated 7/23 – sadly Hansa’s is now closed!

Tharavadhu, 7/8 Mill Hill, Leeds, LS1 5DQ

Tharavadhu serves Keralan Indian food and whilst they’re an omnivore restaurant, they have a number of vegan options (currently marked vegetarian on their menu, but ask and they’ll confirm which are dairy and egg free). During the week they do a bargain vegan ‘express lunch’, costing just a fiver for a thali and dosa. If you’re heading there for an evening meal then my favourite dish is the delicious vazhutanangha aubergine curry.

Anyway, that’s enough from me – let’s hear your suggestions! Please leave a reply below. Here are some of the suggestions so far:
